Mrs. Hampton was born on March 3, 1921, in Columbia, North Carolina, the daughter of Thomas and Kate Shallington. She graduated from Columbia High School and attended North Carolina College for Women at Greensboro (now UNC Greensboro) but left school when the United States entered World War II to work at the Navy Yards in Norfolk, Virginia. After the war, she owned and operated Shore Acres Motel in Nags Head, North Carolina, until it was sold in 1973. For six decades "Miss Mary" was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church in Plymouth serving in the Altar Guild, the Episcopal Church Women, and as a Vestry member.

Mrs. Hampton is predeceased by her brother, Thomas William Shallington of Spring, Texas and her first husband, George E. Spencer, who died in 1953. She was married to her husband of more than fifty years, William Roy "Pete" Hampton, who died in 2009. She is survived by her four children, Nancy Hampton Harper, whose husband Tommy C. died in 2014; Robert William Hampton and his wife Sara; Elizabeth Hampton Hinkes and her husband Bill; and Kate Nelson Hampton. She has four grandchildren, Ashley Hampton Wheeler and her husband Brad; the late Spencer Hampton; William Hampton Hinkes; and Eliza Marion Hinkes. She has two great grandchildren, Jayce Riley Sarafino and Lillian Spencer Wheeler.

There will be a graveside service on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church.

Mary Hampton was a kind and loving person, always giving of herself. Her family is grateful to have enjoyed her loving kindness for as many years as was allowed us.
