Obituary for William "Gene" Roberts

William Eugene "Gene" Roberts, of Plymouth, passed into the care of his Heavenly Father on January 29, 2023 surrounded by family and friends.  Nearly 93 years old, Mr. Gene lived a long and full life of service to his family, country, and the Lord.

Born in West Virginia on February 3rd, 1930, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1948 and married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Peggy" Cox, in 1949.

With the Marines, he served in China and the Korean Conflict.  During his time in the Air Force, he represented the United States, and won the European Pistol Championship in 1961.  As an Intelligence Analyst for the Department of Defense he served in Africa and at the Pentagon.

Many friendships were formed through the various hobbies he embraced during his lifetime including boat racing, car racing, marksmanship, and hunting.  He loved to fly and loved sharing that experience as a certified flight instructor.  His skill as a woodworker placed many items made by his hands into the hands of others who cherished the results of his work.

His life of service in his community included Shriners, where he rode a Harley Hog in parades and fundraisers in support of the Children's Hospital.  He was also a member of the Masons, The VFW, Town Council, The Gideons, and many more.

The most important thread throughout his adult life was his service to the Lord.  Teaching Sunday School and sharing his knowledge and understanding of the Bible were extremely important to him.

Gene is survived by his wife of 73 years, Elizabeth "Peggy" Roberts and his three daughters, Terry Roberts (Karey), Wendy Maxwell, Kelley Jenkins (Don) and his six grandchildren, Bree Anderson (Andy), Jay Blake (Hannah), Jessica Blake, Anne Maxwell (Matt), Bryce Hilgenfeldt (Eric), Taylor Maxwell (Ben), and seven great grandchildren, Colin, Ryan, and Wyatt Anderson, Reese, Maxwell, and Rae Hilgenfeldt, and Ian Maxwell.

Gene was predeceased by his dear friend, Clifford Frymier.

Services for Mr. William E. Roberts will be held at First Baptist Church in Plymouth, on Saturday, February 11th at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests your support of Amedisys Hospice located at 201 E. Water Street, Plymouth, NC 27962 in gratitude for the gentle and loving care of Mr. Roberts in his final days or charity of choice.
