Obituary for Pearl Hope Gray Jones Stanton
Hope Jones Stanton, a long-time resident of Plymouth, died at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital on March 15, 2018, after a brief illness. She was born on June 15, 1932, in Popular Branch, Currituck County. Her family moved to Portsmouth, Virginia in the early 1940s and she graduated from Churchland High School.
Pearl Hope Gray met Doward Nixon Jones in Elizabeth City, NC, and they were married on July 16, 1950. Through the 1950s and early 1960s, they made successive moves to Sanford, FL., New York, N.Y., West Point, GA., Ft. Payne, AL., and to Plymouth, NC in 1962, where, together, they owned and operated The Roanoke Beacon community newspaper. She was a long-time, active member of First Baptist Church, Plymouth.
Mrs. Stanton was preceded in death by Mr. Jones; by her second husband, Dr. Allie M. Stanton; by her daughter, Lynn Jones Ennis; and by her son-in-law, Larry W. Ennis. Surviving are sons Doward, Jr. and wife Arden of Roper, NC, Allen and wife Georgina of Raleigh, NC and step-son, Dr. Edward Stanton and wife Linda of Sanford, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren, Emily Alexander and husband Chris of Raleigh, NC, Phillip Jones of Winterville, NC, Allison Jones of San Francisco, CA., Hannah Rains and husband Heath Grant of Raleigh, NC, Erika DeBlasi and husband Ernie of Boynton Beach, FL.; as well as Craig Stanton, Jeff Stanton and Scott Stanton. Mrs. Stanton is also survived by great-grandchildren, Tess Alexander, Ellis Grant, Greta Grant, Beni DeBlasi and Sophie DeBlasi.
Always active in local communities, Mrs. Stanton held significant positions and memberships in many organizations: Plymouth Chapter of the Salvation Army, The Washington County Historical Society, Rotary International, Plymouth Garden Club, Northeastern NC Economic Development among others.
A memorial service for Mrs. Stanton will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Plymouth with Jimmy Hagwood officiating. Family will receive friends on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, NC.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Plymouth, NC.
