Obituary for Etta Mae House
Etta Mae Moore House of Plymouth and Atlantic Beach, NC, known by many as Mae, passed away peacefully at her home at 7:05 AM on September 13, 2016, with her family by her side. She was a courageous, loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Although she battled for many years against cancer, diabetes, medical treatments and other health challenges, she never complained and she always put the needs of others ahead of her own.
Born July 26, 1938, in Bertie County, Etta Mae was the daughter of the late Joseph Archie and Edith Mizelle Moore of Windsor. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Harry House; her daughter, Tina Pruett of Fredericksburg, VA; her son, Clay House and his wife Kimberly of Ellicott City, MD and her grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan Pruett and Kyle, Colin and Cameron House.
Etta Mae attended Greensboro College and continued her education after marriage, receiving a BA in Education from the University of New York at Rockport. She dedicated her life to her teaching, her family and her faith. She taught third grade in Rochester, NY, third grade in Plymouth, first grade at Lawrence Academy and Adult Education (GED and ESL) at Martin Community College. Throughout her career, she emphasized the importance of basic reading skills, which she promoted through videos of success in her role as an instructional coordinator. In 1985, Mae led a segment of "Do You Read Me," an educational TV series for adult education. When North Carolina implemented the CASAS basic skills program in its community colleges, Mae was one of the first educators selected to travel the state training instructors in the new system. Although her career was important, Mae's heart was always with her family. Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her children, her grandchildren, and her beloved husband, Harry. Her friends and neighbors will remember Mae as an involved, caring and thoughtful community member who was well-loved by all she met. She could often be found surrounded by her family and friends, socializing, playing cards and spending time at the beach. Finally, Mae was heavily involved in her faith and she attended weekly services, volunteered and taught Sunday school at Plymouth United Methodist Church, where she also served as the past president of the United Methodist Women's Memorial Fund.
A memorial service will be held at Plymouth United Methodist Church on Friday, September 16, 2016, at 2:00 PM, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Plymouth United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice. Please mark any donations in the name of Etta Mae House, Plymouth UMC, PO Box 734, Plymouth, NC 27962.
