Obituary for William A. Porter
William Andrew "Bill" Porter, Sr., 80, of Plymouth, NC passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at his residence.
He was born on October 19, 1929 in Detroit, MI to Robert W. and Stella J. Porter who preceded him in death.
Bill is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Mable P. Porter; three children, Linda P. West and husband Kerry of Plymouth, NC, Amy P. Gurganus and husband Dean of Plymouth, NC and William Andrew Porter, Jr. and wife Susan of Greenville, NC.
Other survivors include six grandchildren, Brantley Andrew West of Chapel Hill, NC, Joshua Stuart West of Greenville, NC, Chelsea Lynn Gurganus of Plymouth, NC, Lauren Paige Porter of Greenville, NC, Kathryn Marie Gurganus of Plymouth, NC and William Andrew Porter, III. of Greenville, NC.
Bill served in the United States Army 223rd Infantry Regiment in the Korean Conflict for two years, January 1951 - December 1952 where he received the Bronze Service Star and a United Nations Service Medal.
He served as a member and the Secretary-Treasurer on the Weyco Credit Union Board of Directors for twenty-two years.
Bill retired from Weyerhaeuser Paper Company in 1996 after forty-seven and one half years as a Wood Scaler and Fiber Operater on the Wood Yard. He retired from farming in 1998 after tending the family farm for twenty-five years.
He was a member of Mount Olive Free Will Baptist Church where he served as Treasurer during the 1970s.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Maitland Memorial Chapel in Plymouth from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Maitland Memorial Chapel with Pastor Robert Travis officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Memorial Gardens following the service. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Olive Free Will Baptist Church, 5548 Long Ridge Rd., Plymouth, N.C. Arrangements are by Maitland Memorial Chapel, Plymouth.
