Obituary for Sue Jones Roberson
Lydia Sue Jones Roberson, 88, of Plymouth died Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at her residence in Plymouth.
Born April 26, 1927 in Hamilton, North Carolina she was the daughter of the late Edward Walton Jones and Sallie Mae Moore Jones and was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas H. Chesson, Thomas C. Culbreth and Cecil Roberson; sisters, Nellie Lee, Lillian Cannon, Natalie Harrell and Edna Robinson; brothers, Dalton Jones, Leslie Jones and W. D. Jones. Sue worked as a receptionist at Martin General Hospital and later as a clerk at Arps Drugstore and retired as a sales representative with Belks Department Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was active in the church Women's Circle. She was a devoted disciple of Jesus who loved to read and discuss the Bible and was intent on helping others. A wonderful cook, she loved serving meals to her guests; any guest in Sue's home could be sure they would never leave hungry! She loved gardening, and was always so happy to see her flowers begin to bloom in the spring. Sue most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, content to sit and talk to her loved ones for hours. She was a strong but gentle woman, and was filled with wisdom that she used to teach and encourage others. Sue was easy to talk to, a great listener, and received regular phone calls and visits from her children, step-children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sue felt that every day was a gift, and was determined to live each day to the fullest. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on through the many lives she touched.
Her family includes her sons, Russell Chesson and Brad Chesson and wife Nan both of New Bern, N.C., Stan Chesson and wife Cheryl of Woodstock, GA.; step-sons, Mike Culbreth and wife Nancy of Plymouth, N.C., Tommy Culbreth and wife Joan of Raleigh, N.C., David Culbreth of Hawaii, Bill Roberson and wife Paulette of Murfreesboro, N.C.; step-daughters, Alice Gardner of Woodbridge, Va. and Dwan Light and husband Jimmy of Zebulon, N.C.; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; eight step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Plymouth with Reverend Jimmy Hagwood officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston. Family will receive friends Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 309 Washington Street, Plymouth, N.C. 27962.
