Obituary for Samuel Emmons Phelps, Jr.
Samuel Emmons Phelps, Jr., 84, of Plymouth died Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at Washington County Hospital in Plymouth. Born October 28, 1927 in Washington County he was the son of the late Samuel Emmons Phelps, Sr. and Ida Furlough Phelps and was preceded in death by his first wife, Betsy Davenport Phelps; sisters, Wenona P. Maloney and Myra P. Spivey; brothers, Calvin Phelps and Ronald Phelps. Sam was a retired machine tender supervisor with Weyerhaeuser Corporation, a U.S. Army World War II Veteran and member of Zions Chapel Church of Christ. He was past master of Providence Lodge No. 678 and Perserverance Lodge No. 59, a Shriner with Washington County Shrine and member of American Legion Post 391. His family includes his wife, Reba King Phelps of Plymouth, N.C.; daughter, Bonita Phelps Cuthrell and husband James of Creswell, N.C.; sons, Robert Phelps and wife Barbara, Teddie Phelps and wife Virginia and Samuel Phelps all of Creswell, N.C., Mark Phelps and wife Julie of Hertford, N.C., David Phelps and wife Sandy of Roper, N.C.; sister, Josephine P. Spruill of Virginia Beach, VA.;grandchildren, Kevin Phelps and wife Wendy of Columbia, N.C., Roger Phelps and wife Heather of Minot,N.D., Lucas Phelps of Plymouth, N.C., Ann Alejandro and husband Jeffery of Greenville,N.C., Jennifer Spencer and husband Jason of Clayton, N.C., Hollie Wilson and husband Curtis of Creswell, N.C., Brandon Phelps of Seaboard, N.C., Betsy Cuthrell of Zebulon, N.C., Zachary Cuthrell and Brian Cuthrell of Creswell, N.C., Matthew Phelps and wife Melissa of Kilkenny, N.C., Elizabeth Phelps and Gwyneth Phelps of Hertford, N.C.;great grandchildren, Devin Phelps and Victoria Phelps of Columbia, N.C., Hunter Phelps and Autumn Phelps of Minot, N.D., Chase Phelps of Plymouth, N.C., Ashton Alejandro and Mason Alejandro of Greenville, N.C., Isabella Spencer of Clayton, N.C., Tyler Phelps of Creswell, N.C.and Gabrielle Hackman of Seaboard, N.C. Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Zions Chapel Church of Christ, Roper with Mark Wilmoth officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Friday, December 2, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Zions Chapel Church of Christ, Roper and other times at the residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
