Obituary for Robert Leslie "R.L." Spruill, Jr.
Robert Leslie "R.L." Spruill, Jr., 88, of Columbia died Monday, March 21, 2016, at Chowan River Nursing Center in Edenton.
Born November 12, 1927 in Tyrrell County he was the son of the late Robert Leslie Spruill, Sr. and Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth Griffin Spruill and was preceded in death by his sisters; Gertrude Spruill Cahoon, Helen Spruill Snell, Lena Rivers Spruill, Mary Alacia Spruill and Sally Margaret Spruill; brother, Gerald Gibbs. R.L. was a retired farmer, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, member of Providence Lodge Number 678, American Legion Post 391 and member of Creswell United Methodist Church. R. L. loved farming and was the happiest while riding on his tractor. It was hard to call this work when he loved it so much. He was a strong but gentle man. He loved his wife, Elizabeth, with all his heart, his family, his friends and his country. Serving his country was an honor and something he was proud of. He and his wife spent many hours working side by side on the farm. He loved spending time with family and friends. He will be missed by all.
His family includes his beloved wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Davenport Spruill of Columbia, N.C.; sons, Robert Leslie Spruill, III and wife Carol and Richard Coy Spruill and wife Teresa both of Columbia, N.C.; sister, Nell Spruill McDaniel of Palm Harbor, FL.; brothers, David Griffin Spruill of Athens, GA. and William "Billy" Walton Spruill of Louisburg, N.C.; grandchildren, Leslie Amyette, Susan Spruill, Justin Spruill, Jenny Reel, Krystle Miller, Stephen Spruill, Lara Pridgen and Dylan Spruill; great grandchildren, Logan Amyette, Nikolas Amyette, Maggie Halperin, Nathan Spruill, Sawyer Spruill, Caleb Spruill, Violet Reel, Karli Hollis, Kelsey Hollis, Kinsley Hollis, Piper Jo Miller, Stephen Spruill, Jr., Owen Spruill and Evan Spruill.
Memorial service will be held Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell. Family will receive friends on Thursday at the funeral home following the service and other times at the residence.
Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
