Obituary for Rex Ventress Swain, Sr.
Rex Ventress Swain, Sr., 76, of Roper died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at his residence.
Born November 9, 1934 in Washington County he was the son of the late Travis Elwood Swain and Lillian Nooney Swain and was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Vanhorn Swain; sisters, Ethel S. Ballance, Vida S. Sawyer, Gaynell S. Armstrong; brothers, Whitford Swain, Travis Swain, Lomas Swain and Ottis Swain. Rex was a retired dredge boat captain with Norfolk Dredging Company and member of Cherry Church of God. After his retirement he was a truck driver for M.E. Edwards & Sons and Phelps Trucking for many years and was a gentleman farmer.
His family includes his daughters, Sandra S. Poe of Roper, N.C., Debra S. Garrett and husband Tommy of Plymouth, N,C., Terri S. Graham of Roper, N.C.; sons, Rex V. "Butch" Swain, Jr. and wife Debbie of Roper, N.C., James E. Swain and wife Miriam of Hertford, N.C.; sister, Dorcas S. Cooper of Rocky Mount, N.C.; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Friday, July 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell with Reverend Steve Mizell officiating. Burial will follow in the Swain Family Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 30, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
