Obituary for Patricia Harrison Parker
Elizabeth Patricia Harrison Parker, 87, of Plymouth was born on February 11, 1930 and went to meet the Lord on March 23, 2017 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.
Born in Moore County she was the daughter of the late Howard Russell Harrison and Lois Eugenia Hendren Harrison and was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Kent; son, Stephen Kent; brothers, Edward N. Harrison and Howard R. Harrison II and sisters, Virginia H. Monroe and Carolyn H. Blue.
Mom was a caring mother and wife, sister and daughter, friend and neighbor. Blessed to find her calling teaching children with disabilities, Mom was gifted with patience and compassion. She really had a way with kids. They were drawn to her side like a magnet. She made children feel special and she made learning fun. Although she went on to achieve many things in administration, she was happiest in her classroom with her students.
She was also good in a crisis.
During Hurricane Isabel, Mom and Dad kept backing up into the next room as one tree after another fell on their house. Dad told us that there was no one else he would rather have gone through that experience with, because Mom was a trooper from start to finish. She never complained during the months they had to live in uncomfortable conditions while the house was being rebuilt.
When Dad passed away, we worried Mom might give up. We were wrong. She grieved Dad terribly, but found reasons to go on. She even grew in new ways.
Her personal relationship with the Lord blossomed. Awhile back, Mom asked Dave if she could begin going to his church. What a profound experience that proved to be. Mom thrived. She grew to new heights spiritually. It was nothing short of amazing to witness.
We are grateful to the Grace Episcopal Church in Plymouth for being Mom's church home for most of her life. This church family brought her comfort when her parents died and especially during the unbearable loss of Steve. The Grace Episcopal Church family was a constant presence during those dark days...
We are also grateful to the Elizabeth City First Church of the Nazarene, for all the love they have shown Mom. We appreciated seeing Mom become Who She Really Is - a woman of faith. Her unwavering trust and desire to be with the Lord has given us strength during this difficult time.
Plymouth was a wonderful town to grow up in and remains a community full of caring people. We thank you all for having been a friend to Mom throughout her lifetime; but never more so than after Dad died. We have been overwhelmed by the many kindnesses you all have continually shown Mom and we are certain that we aren't aware of even half of them. There are three kind souls that we would particularly like to thank: Ronnie Spruill, his late wife Renee and Alice Sawyer. We have no words to express our gratitude for ALL that you have done.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you do something sweet and unexpected for a friend. Visit someone who is ill or lonely. Write a note of encouragement to one who could really use it. Tell the ones you love how much you care. Pray for those going through a rough patch. Make one person's day, in some small way, each day and your life will overflow with joyful moments.
A private family graveside service was held Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Hillside Memorial Gardens in Plymouth with Pastor Kristopher David Adams officiating. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 2:00 pm at First Church of the Nazarene located at 1085 U.S. Highway 17 South in Elizabeth City. We would love to see you there.
