Obituary for Merian Leo Spear
Merian Leo Spear, 87, of Creswell died Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at his residence in Creswell.

Born August 22, 1928 in Washington County he was the son of the late Isaac Iadore Spear and Harriet Elizabeth Oliver Spear and was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine S. Davenport; brothers, Mitchell Spear, Ronald Spear, Dan Spear, I.J. Spear, Grover Spear and Clyde Spear. Leo was a retired correctional officer with the North Carolina Department of Corrections and a member of Philippi Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of American Legion Post 391.

His family includes his wife, Paula Phelps Spear of Creswell, N.C.; sons, Tim I. Spear and Marty P. Spear both of Creswell, N.C. and Tommy L. Spear of Columbia, N.C.; brother, James E. Spear of Creswell, N.C.; grandchildren, Jinnifer Odom, Deanna Lingman, Mandy Voliva, Timothy Spear, Jr., Paula Spear and Shivon Spear; great grandchildren, Chelsea Salinas, Michaela Odom, Jacob Phelps, Makenzie Phelps and Jemma Roughton.

Funeral service will be held Friday, September 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Philippi Church of Christ, Creswell with Glenn Brickhouse and Thomas Biggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Philippi Church of Christ and other times at the residence.

Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
