Obituary for Marilyn Grimes Griffin
Mrs. Marilyn B. Grimes Griffin, age 85 and resident of Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Raleigh, passed away November 4, 2016 from an extended illness. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on August 8, 1931 and was the daughter of the late Florence Hull Britt and George Thomas Britt of Ahoskie, N.C.. Mrs. Grimes Griffin attended East Carolina College (now ECU) and earned a two year degree in business. After being a stay at home Mom until her children were older, she became a teacher's assistant in the second grade at Church Street School in Williamston, N.C. for several years, secretary to the Principal at Plymouth High School in Plymouth, N.C. for one year, and secretary for Weyerhaeuser Paper Company Wood Products Division in Plymouth for twenty-four years until her retirement in 1994. Prior to moving to Raleigh in 2000, she was a member of Plymouth's Grace Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the vestry and choir and as the secretary of the Episcopal Churchwomen. After moving to Raleigh, she became a member at St. Mark's Methodist Church and became involved in Women's Circle and her beloved Adult Sunday School class. Mrs. Grimes Griffin is the widow of the late William S. (Billy) Grimes of Plymouth, who died in August 1993 and the widow of the late Victor A. (Vic) Griffin of Raleigh, who died in January 2016.
Surviving are her loving children, Laura Smith of Wake Forest, N.C., Stuart Grimes and wife Vickie of Midlothian, VA., Scott Grimes and wife Kim of Macon, GA. and Georgia Edwards and husband Buddy of Snellville, GA.; her beloved sister, Dorothy Piontek of Trinity, FL.; eight grandchildren, Eric Langley and wife Megan, Brandon Smith of Wake Forest, N.C., Cameron Grimes of Wilmington, N.C., Palmer Grimes of Vancouver, B.C., Dusty Edwards and wife Lauren of Snellville, GA., Frankie Edwards of Atlanta, GA. and Ryan and Jason Minor of Richmond, VA; four great grandchildren, Kellan and Addy Langley of Wake Forest, N.C., Eleanor Grace Edwards of Snellville, GA. and Zoe Nettles of Richmond, VA. and three step-daughters, Vickie Tribble of Roxboro, N.C., Sylvia Hammons of Raleigh, N.C. and Liz Snotherly of Raleigh, N.C..
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at St. Mark's Methodist Church on Six Forks Road, Raleigh at 11:00 a.m., where she was a member and dedicated servant of the Lord until she became unable to attend her beloved church. Also, the family will greet guests during a visitation prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery, Plymouth, N.C. with a graveside service at 4:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her honor to St. Mark's Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Rex Rehab and Nursing Care of Raleigh, Rex Hospital Memorial Fund or Transitions (formerly Hospice of Wake County).
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Millbrook, Road, Raleigh and Maitland Funeral Home of Plymouth, N.C..
