Aletha Mae Vanhorn Basnight, 95, of Roper, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Carrolton of Plymouth.
Born in Washington County she was the daughter of the late Willie Vanhorn and Penny Sexton Vanhorn and was preceded in death by her loving husband, Julian Calvin Basnight; son, Larry Elwood Rose; sisters, Gerlean Owens, Patsy Schultz, Beulah Sharlow, Barbara Swain, and Faye Weathersbee. She owned and operated a restaurant.
Her family includes her daughter, Janice Rose Ross of Elizabeth City, NC; sons, Lewis Wayne Rose and wife Karen of Roper, NC, and Michael Calvin Basnight of Elizabeth City, NC and sister, Florence Hassell of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Robert Curnutte, Patrick Rose, and Krista Bladen; great grandchildren, David, Brittney, Matthew, Shelby; great-great grandchildren, Bryson and Peyton.
Mae was a very active and talented lady. She loved fishing, working in her yard and singing/listening to gospel music.
Funeral will be held Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Cherry Church of God in Creswell with David Phelps and Steve Mizell officiating. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Church prior to the service. A private family burial will be held at Hillside Memorial Gardens.
