Obituary for Madge Lane VanHorne
Madge Lane VanHorne, 89, of Columbia died Saturday, October 8, 2011, at her residence in Columbia. Born March 26, 1922 in Perquimans County she was the daughter of the late Lafayette Lane and Hattie Rountree Lane and was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Cleveland VanHorne and brother, John Nelson Lane. Mrs. VanHorne was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College. She taught forty years in North Carolina Public Schools teaching Social Studies, English and French. Her teaching career began in Ervin, North Carolina then to Oak City, Colerain and then to Columbia where she taught from 1948 to 1984 when she retired. She was advisor for the Beta Club and Drama Club where she directed her students in production of countless plays. She was the advisor of the high school newspaper and year book. She worked with students in production of the magazine, Swamproots every year from 1974 to 1984 with a special 250th anniversary edition in 1979 celebrating the 250th anniversary of Tyrrell County. Volume 10 of Swamproots won the North Carolina Society of County and Local Historians' prestigious Hodges Award. She taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class at Up River Meeting and Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church from 1943 to 2005. She worked with the youth at Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church for many years. She was a member of the Tyrrell County Board of Education in the late 1980s. She served on the original Scuppernong River Festival Committee and worked with several others on the book, Bridging Generations, a history of Tyrrell County. After retiring she worked in the adult education program of Beaufort Community College. Her family includes her son, Cleveland Layne VanHorne of Columbia, N.C.; sister, Ruby L. Harrell of Hertford, N.C.; grandchildren, Shawn VanHorne and wife Chrystal, Angie VanHorne and husband Wayne, Kristen VanHorne Kubik and husband Chris and Dustin VanHorne; great grandchilden, Shane, Bryson, Brandon, Brianna and Angelika and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church, Columbia with Reverend Royce Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends on Monday, October 10, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church and other times at the residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
