Lionel Corey Bateman, Sr., 96, of Columbia passed away at his home on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
Born in Tyrrell County he was the son of the late James Henry Bateman and Pauline Spruill Bateman and was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Roughton Bateman. Lionel was a farmer and commercial fisherman. He loved being outside enjoying God's creations. He was a member of Sound Side Missionary Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.
Lionel loved spending time with family and friends. What a legacy he leaves behind! His memory will live on with all of the wonderful memories that he has left behind and will be greatly missed by those that had the pleasure of knowing him. He always greeted everyone with a huge smile and loved to catch up with whatever was going on in the community and town and was very avid in keeping with the local and national news.
His family includes his sons; Lionel Corey Bateman, Jr. and wife Sandra of Edenton, NC, Clark James Bateman and wife Angela of Rocky Mount, NC, Hal Joseph Bateman and wife Donna of Columbia, NC; daughters, Crystal Bateman Cowen and husband Henry of Hoschton, GA and Ruth Bateman Spencer and husband Louis of Columbia, NC; grandchildren, Terra Bateman, Eric Bateman, Lionel Bateman, III and wife Sara, David Bateman and wife Jennifer, Kristopher Bateman and wife Shelby, Kevin Bateman, Adrienne Rose and husband Josh, Matthew Bateman and wife Johnna, Hal Joseph Bateman, Jr. and wife Kaitlin, John Bateman and wife Kayla, Cameron Cowen, Hailey Cowen, Carrie Armstrong and husband Tony, and Nathan Spencer; step grandchildren, Riley Hainey and Cooper Coleson; twenty-two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Sound Side Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church and other times at the residence.
