Obituary for Larry Irving Watson

Larry Irving Watson died January 12, 2024 secondary to a respiratory illness he developed after celebrating the Christmas holiday with his family in his hometown of Plymouth, North Carolina.  He was 83 years old.

Mr. Watson was born September 12,1940 in Mackeys, NC to parents Marie Long and Jasper Irving Watson.  Larry spent his childhood and teen years in Plymouth, NC and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1958.  He continued his education at North Carolina State University from where he graduated in 1962, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.  After graduation, Larry moved to Georgetown, South Carolina to work for International Paper Company and in 1965, he married Nyal Womble, his wife of 56 years.  They resided in Georgetown, SC and Pine Bluff, Arkansas before making the move back to his hometown of Plymouth to work for Weyerhaeuser Paper Company.  Larry worked as a project engineer, engineering group leader, and utilities manager before his retirement, and he valued the relationships formed during this time at Weyerhaeuser.

Living in Plymouth kept Larry close to his family, and allowed him to spend time with his children, stay involved in his church community, and pursue hobbies such as golf, hunting, fishing, and woodworking.  After retirement, Larry and Nyal enjoyed traveling in their RV along with a group of their friends.  Their travels took them to various places across the country and created many cherished memories and new friends.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nyal Womble Watson, and his sister Lillian Gurganus.  He is survived by his two children, Dr. Larry Watson, Jr. and his wife Selina, daughter Kerri Lundy and husband Jonathan, grandchildren Claire Lundy, Patrick Lundy, and Simon Lundy, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church with Jimmy Elks and Ray Lundy officiating. Family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
