Kate Nelson Hampton, age 65 of Plymouth, died on December 2, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. Surrounded by family, she died peacefully at home where she had lived for almost all of her life.
Kate was born on August 17, 1958 in Elizabeth City. She is predeceased by her parents, William Roy Hampton, Jr. and Mary Shallington Hampton, and nephew Robert Spencer Hampton. She is survived by sisters Nancy Harper and Elizabeth Hinkes (husband William) all of Plymouth, brother Robert Hampton of Roper; niece Ashley Wheeler (husband Brad Wheeler) and their children Jayce Riley Sarafino and Lillian Spencer Wheeler, all of Grimesland, niece Eliza Hinkes (husband Brian Christian) of Seattle, WA, and nephew Will Hinkes (wife Rachel Kenney) of Columbia, MD.
Kate graduated from Plymouth High School in 1977. Soon after, she began work at Variety Wholesale (Roses) retiring in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Kate was a life-long parishioner at Grace Episcopal Church where she helped with Altar Guild, graveyard administration, and the church nursery, and served as an acolyte and eucharistic minister. She was a prodigious donator of blood to the American Red Cross and would encourage everyone to donate. Recently, Kate helped deliver food for Meals on Wheels. She was an avid knitter, particularly of baby blankets. And she was a great fan of soap operas with her favorite being "Young and the Restless."
Kate will leave a giant-sized hole in the hearts of her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Grace Episcopal Church or the American Red Cross.
Burial services will be private but a reception to celebrate Kate's life will be held on Friday, December 15th at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church Parish House. Everyone is welcome.
Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
