Obituary for Joseph Lannie Harrell, Sr.

Joseph Lannie "Joe" Harrell Sr., 71, of Plymouth passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at ECU Health Chowan in Edenton.


Born January 14, 1951, in Ahoskie, he was the son of the late James Leslie Harrell and Rosemond Harris Harrell.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Phelps Harrell; brothers, Daniel and Timothy Harrell, and great niece, Ellie Mae Noell.  He was a  dedicated member of Grace Baptist Church.


He is survived by his wife, Denise Harrell; his daughter, Ruth Snell and husband Jared; son, Joey Harrell and wife Morgan; his stepson, Eric Beck, Jr.; his grandchildren, AJ Harrell, McKellon Snell, Henderson Snell, Leo Harrell, and Ryder Harrell, and step-grandson, Weston Beck; brothers, David Harrell and wife Kathy, Roger Harrell and wife Sheryl, Pete Harrell and wife Lulu; sisters, Shirley Smith and husband Reid, and Pattie Harrell; brother-in-law, Jerry Phelps and wife Karen; sisters-in-law, Angelia Phelps and husband Troy, Faith Noell and husband David.  Survivors also include many beloved nieces, nephews, and special extended family members, many of whom were like his own children and grandchildren.


His working career started at Manning Motor Company as a mechanic.  He began working for Weyerhaeuser in 1972 and after 46 years, he retired from Domtar in 2018 where he held various operator jobs on the Woodyard, occasionally setting up as Foreman/Shift Team Leader.  He was also responsible for heading up the ISO program and instrumental in developing the Woodyard Operator Modules as well as the updating and revising of those toward the end of his career.


During his life, he coached and refereed for the Plymouth Soccer League, umpired Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball.  He also served as the President for Woodmen of the World Lodge 1428 and was a member of Buck & Doe Hunting Club.


He was an avid gardener, enjoyed grilling, playing guitar, and singing gospel music.  He also loved fishing, hunting, and feeding all his critters.


Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth, with Pastor Lee Price officiating.  Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.  Family will receive friends on Friday, October 21, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth and other times at the residence of his daughter Ruth.
