Obituary for James Edgar Bateman
James Edgar Bateman, 91, of Plymouth died Monday, September 26, 2016, at Roanoke Landing in Plymouth.
Born March 20, 1925 in Washington County he was the son of the late Jesse Rudolph Bateman and Mary Catherine Bateman and was preceded in death by his sisters, Lola Bateman, Frances Arnold, Doris Ellis, Mary Louise Davenport and Sandra Allen. Mr. Bateman has been the owner of The Jewel Shoppe in Plymouth for over 65 years and a member of First Christian Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, Perseverance Lodge No. 59 and the Scottish Rite.
His family includes his wife, Geraldine Holbrook Bateman of Plymouth, N.C.; daughters, Arden Bateman Jones and husband Doward Jr. and Jamie Bateman Leary and husband Nevis both of Roper, N.C.; sister, Linda Jones of Virginia; grandchildren, Phillip Jones, Alburn Rhodes and husband Patrick and Luke Leary; great grandchildren, Claire Rhodes and Lilly Rhodes.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church, Plymouth with Reverend Jimmy Hagwood officiating. Burial will follow in Windley Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at First Baptist Church and other times at the residence.
