Obituary for Harrison Waylon Phelps
Harrison Waylon Phelps, 86, of Plymouth died Saturday, April 11, 2020, at his residence in Plymouth after a long battle with cancer and heart disease.
Born December 17, 1933 in Washington County he was the son of the late Jordan Elwood Phelps and Clara Furlough Phelps and was preceded in death by his wife, Mivarene Pendleton Phelps; brothers, Manfred Phelps, Brooks Phelps, Dale Phelps and Teddy Phelps. Harrison retired from Weyerhaeuser Corporation with forty-six years service and was a member of Mount Tabor Original Free Will Baptist Church. He was a fifty-six year member, past secretary and past master of Perseverance Lodge No. 59 A.F. & A. M of Plymouth, member of the Scottish Rite and was a Shriner. He was a U.S. Army Veteran with service in England and volunteer and supporter of the Plymouth Food Pantry.
His family includes his wife of thirty-nine years, Shirleyan Beacham Phelps of Plymouth, N.C.; daughter, Susan P. Adams and husband Carey of Chocowinity, N.C.; sons, Troy Phelps and wife Angelia of Washington, N.C. and Ray Phelps of Raleigh, N.C.; step-son, Bill Peebles and wife Patty of Washington, N.C.; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Harrison enjoyed his daily early morning visits to the back woods, where he fed and photographed wildlife. Over the past months, he appreciated all the random acts of kindness-warm cookies, phone calls and visits, e-mail messages forwarded to him and cards. He loved watching birds from his sofa and his television remote control.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Cards will be appreciated to P.O. Box 982, Plymouth, N.C. 27962. Memorial gifts to Masonic Home For Children, 600 College Street, Oxford, N.C. 27565 or charity of choice. Family request at this time no food, flowers or visits.
