Obituary for Gordon Alpheus Chesson
Gordon Alpheus Chesson, 93, of Roper died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at his residence in Roper. Born September 5, 1918 in Washington County he was the son of the late Alpheus Marion Chesson and Bonnie Swanner Chesson and was preceded in death by his son, Larry Gray Chesson; sisters, Sadie Stillman and Ola Patrick; brothers, Roland Chesson, Dallas Chesson, Hilton Chesson and Kenneth Chesson. Gordon was a retired store room manager with Weyerhaeuser Corporation and member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, member of American Legion Post 391, member of Mid-County Ruritan Club, charter member of Mid-County Fire Department and former member of the Washington County Board of Education. His family includes his wife, Thelma Pierce Chesson of Roper, N.C.; daughters, Freda C. Phelps and husband Charles of Creswell, N.C., Debra C. Hopkins and husband Blaine of Columbia, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Undine Chesson of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Natalie Pope and husband Alex, Nicole Hopkins, Emilou Phelps and Eric Hopkins; great granddaughter, Kayla Pope. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell with Edgar Masencup officiating. Entombment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 following the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
