Francis Stewart Saunders, 95, of Plymouth died Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at his residence in Plymouth. Born January 4, 1918 in Bertie County he was the son of the late Dr. Sheldon Asa Saunders and Myra Aumack Saunders. Stewart graduated from the U.S. Naval Midshipmen's School at Notre Dame and served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a Lieutenant JG. Stewart returned from the Navy to a successful career in the paper industry. He was blessed with over thirty years of retirement with his family, friends and former co-workers on the waters and back roads of northeast North Carolina. Grandchildren, quail hunting, golf, gardening, fishing, overseeing farm activities and Carolina basketball were consuming interests. He embraced a contemporary attitude and stayed forever young. His family includes his wife of 65 years, Meredith Latham Johnston Saunders of Plymouth, N.C.; daughter, Laura Saunders Vaughan and husband Emory of Cheriton, Va.; son, Robert Sheldon Saunders and wife Jeannine of Plymouth, N.C.; brother, Dr. J.
