Obituary for Frances Bickel Jones

Helen Frances Bickel Jones, 91, of Plymouth, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.  She was born on April 4, 1932, to the late Leon Robert Bickel of Union City, Indiana, and Margaret Gordon Bickel of Hickory, North Carolina.


Frances grew up in the mountains of North Carolina before moving to Plymouth.  She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1950 and completed her education at East Carolina University with B.S. and M.A. degrees.  She taught in the Washington County School System for 36 years.


A lifetime Episcopalian, Frances served her Grace Episcopal Church as a senior warden and member of the Episcopal Church Women.  She was a member of the North Carolina Retired School Personnel, serving as treasurer and secretary.  She was an organizing member of the Brick House Landing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as secretary and regent for many years.  She also acted as an editor for the book "Washington County, NC:  A Tapestry."


Frances was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Glenn Jones, son Jerry Richard Jones, grandson Robert Matthew Jones and sister Margaret Bickel Adams.


She is survived by her children, Robert Glenn Jones and wife Lisa, Nelson Jones, Leon Bryant Jones and wife Dorothea Snow Jones, and Michael Walton Jones.  She has three surviving grandchildren, Laura Jones Tovar, Heather Jones and Cameron Jones, and two great grandchildren, Harrison Tovar and Max Tovar.


Family was always her primary focus in life.  She also felt blessed to have such wonderful friends.


Memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Plymouth on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 2:00 p.m..


A reception will be held in the Parish House following the service.


In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to Grace Episcopal Church.
