Obituary for Dr. Edward Harvie Hill, Jr.
Dr. Edward Harvie Hill, Jr. passed peacefully in his sleep on December 1st, 2020 at the age of 78, following a decline in health due to Alzheimer's disease. He resided in Raleigh, NC with his wife, Jane Styons Hill. Known as Harvie to friends and family, he was born in Covington, Virginia and he spent his formative years in Plymouth, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Harvie Hill, Sr. and Katheryn Mae Topping Hill, as well as Martha Parker Stanley, who was raised as his sister. A loving and attentive father, Dr. Hill will be missed by his four daughters from previous marriages: Mary Hill Stokes (Von) and Kathryn Hill Kreutzer (David), both of Charlotte; Megan Marie Hill of New York City and Melanie Mae Hill of Palm Beach, Florida. He is also survived by his six grandchildren.
Harvie attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and Captain of the Golf Team. Most importantly, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1964, Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1968, and Master of Science in Pedodontics in 1970.
Beginning December of 1967, Dr. Hill served in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served at Naval Dental Centers on Guam, as well as in Parris Island, South Carolina. He completed his service honorably in May 1976. Dr. Hill continued practicing pediatric dentistry throughout his career in Raleigh, Fayetteville, Raeford, Hamlet, and Shallotte, NC. He served as President of the 4th District NC Dental Society. After retirement, he consulted at the College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University.
Harvie was a Master Mason of the 32nd degree. He began his rites in 1988 at the John Husk Anderson Lodge (later folded into Creasy Proctor Lodge) in Fayetteville, NC.
With his eternally optimistic view on life and a love for helping others, Dr. Hill brightened the lives of everyone that knew him. "It's a beautiful day and I feel wonderful!" Memories of him will keep him alive in the hearts of his loved ones forever.
Graveside Services will be held in Plymouth, NC at Plymouth United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in the name of Dr. Edward Harvie Hill, Jr.
