Obituary for Dorothy Smithwick Askew
Dorothy Marie Smithwick Askew, 89, of Plymouth died Thursday, June 18, 2020, at her residence in Plymouth.

Born June 10, 1931 in Bertie County she was the daughter of the late Coy Clifton Smithwick and Nancy Emma Dunlow Smithwick and was preceded in death by her husband, Murry Hassell "Bill" Askew; son, David Rex Askew; grand-daughter, Pamela Renee Black; sister, Judy S. Perez; brother, David Smithwick and brother-in-law, Archie Borunda. Dorothy was co-owner and bookkeeper working along with her husband Bill at Askews Used Cars for about fifty years. She was a past member of Plymouth Quilters Guild and member of Plymouth Church Of The Nazarene. Dorothy was the first manager of Catos in Plymouth in the mid-sixties and worked at Weyco Credit Union for a short time. Dorothy loved her family, enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing. She was an avid reader, loved working in her flowers and yard and was famous for her banana pudding, pineapple cake and hummingbird cake.

Her family includes her daughters, Linda Brothers Markham and husband Jerry of Elizabeth City, NC and Dorothy Gail Cornwell and husband Jerry of Washington, NC; son, Phillip Ray Askew and wife Janel of Plymouth, NC; sisters, Betty S. Borunda of Washington, NC and Yvonne S. Oliver and husband Mahlon of Plymouth, NC; eight grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2020, at 2:00 pm at Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth with Pastors Steve Creech and Edgar Masencup officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Sunday at the funeral home following the service and other times at the residence.
