Obituary for Dorothy Humphreys Spencer
Dorothy Louise Spencer passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2020. She was born in Richwood, West Virginia on August 22, 1930 to Frazier and Janet Humphreys. The family relocated to Plymouth where her father was employed at the paper mill. Dorothy graduated from Plymouth High School and attended Shenandoah Music Conservatory in Dayton, Virginia. Prior to graduation, Dorothy married Paul Spencer. Together, Paul and Dorothy raised their four children in Plymouth, operated a residential home construction and rental business, and attended First Baptist Church where they sang in the church choir and Dorothy played the organ and piano. Dorothy taught piano lessons in her home and shared her great love of classical music with many children throughout Eastern North Carolina. Later in life, she proudly graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in Organ Music. Dorothy continued to use her music gifts to honor God and the church as she remained the church organist at Grace Episcopal Church in Plymouth until her passing.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brothers: Frank Humphreys, Fred Humphreys, Victor Humphreys, Frazier Humphreys, and younger sister, Alice Humphreys (Hopkins).
She is survived by her four children: Debbie Spencer of Washington, NC; Mark Spencer (Joanne) of Franklin, Indiana; Sterling Spencer of Plymouth, NC; and Carol Riggs (Andy) of Winterville, NC.
"Granny" is remembered and lovingly missed by her four grandchildren: Grace Scott (Wes) of Logansport, Indiana; Caleb Spencer of Nineveh, Indiana; Megan Newman (Michael) of Greenville, NC; and Steven Riggs of Greenville, NC.
Her six great grandchildren will continue to hear stories about Granny and how she loved them and their parents. Dorothy's many gifts and talents will live on in Keaton Scott, Quinn Scott, Michael Newman, Maddox Newman, Ivan Spencer and Heidi Spencer.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery with Reverend Henry Burdick officiating. Family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.
Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
