Obituary for David Rex Askew
David Rex Askew, 51, of Corpus Christi, Texas and formerly of Plymouth died Thursday, September 25, 2014, at his residence in Corpus Christi. Born September 28, 1962 in Washington County he was the son of the late Murry Hassell 'Bill' Askew and Dorothy Smithwick Askew who survives. Rex worked as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist with Naval Air Station, CCAD Corpus Christi. He served 20 years and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Deputy Fire Chief. During his military service he served in Operation Desert Storm and the Gulf War. After his retirement from the Air Force he was an Emergency Management Director in Warren County before moving to Corpus Christi. His family includes his mother, Dorothy Smithwick Askew of Plymouth, N.C.; son, David Niel Askew and wife Carrie of Corpus Christi, TX.; daughter, Laura Askew Vargas and husband Yeshua of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico; sisters, Linda Askew Markham and husband Jerry of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Gail Askew Cornwell and husband Jerry of Williamston, N.C.; brother, Phil R. Askew and wife Janel of Plymouth, N.C. and eight grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth with Pastor Steve Creech officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his mother. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
