Charles Herbert Luton, 90, went to his heavenly home on March 29, 2025 at his home after a long battle with illness. Mr. Luton was well-known and well-loved in his community, especially for his collards, sweet potatoes and strawberries produced on his family farm. He had a smile for everyone and never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Born May 13,1934 to Ursey Morris Luton and Georgianna Cartwright, Charles was the second youngest of 11 children. Charles grew up near Symon's Creek in Pasquotank County, NC. He served his country in the US Army from 1953 to 1955. After his time in service, Charles worked for several different companies and eventually made his way to the Tidewater Research Station in Roper, where he worked as farm foreman until he retired in 1993. Those that worked with Charles often remarked about his work ethic, leadership and fairness that he demonstrated throughout his entire career. Those same qualities were displayed in any work Charles did, including the work of raising a family and as a member of his community. Charles was a member of Zion's Chapel Church of Christ at the time of his passing; he treasured his church family there, as well as his brothers and sisters in Christ at Plymouth Church of Christ and Roper Baptist Church.
Charles is preceded by his first wife, Mary Glenn McPherson Luton. They married in 1957 and were married for 46 years prior to her passing in 2004. Charles later married Lora Lee Furlough Luton who passed away in 2019. Charles was also preceded in death by sisters, Lessie, Mildred, Mary-Ann, Delia, Evelyn, Fuga Lee, Rubelle, Janet and Gloria; brother, Cecil.
Charles' family includes, Scot Luton and wife Terri of Roper, NC; daughter, Anna Luton of Roper, NC; step-son Willie Leroy "Buddy" Furlough and wife Sylvia; step-daughters Vanessa White and husband Louis; Valerie West and husband Rick; Vicki Riley and husband Marty. Charles also leaves behind grandchildren Matthew Luton; Kellie Luton Binnicker and husband Tyler; step grandchildren Paige Keselowski, Tyler White, Kellen Furlough, Kaitlyn Furlough and Harley West Roscoe as well as several step-great grandchildren. Charles also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and precious family friends that loved him dearly.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 11:00 am at Zion's Chapel Church of Christ, officiated by Eddie Bowen. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church..
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Charles' memory to Zion's Chapel Church of Christ or Plymouth Church of Christ.
