Obituary for Captain A. W. Sirginson
Funeral for Captain A. W. Sirginson, who died Tuesday, August 18, 2009, will be held Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1801 Elm Street, Greenville, N.C. 27858. Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M. on Saturday at the church. Entombment, Pinewood Memorial Park, Greenville, N.C.
Captain A. W. Sirginson, was born in Bellingham, Washington, July 16, 1917. He was the second born of three children and was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Charlotte and Adair. He attended Long Beach High School and then New York University, New York City. He graduated and joined the midshipman class at Great Lakes, Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. In 1942 he met Bertha soon to be his wife and had four children, William, Richard, Dorothy and Ellizabeth. During WWII he was given command of three ships and was one of the few Supply Corps officers that held command at sea during the war in the Pacific. Over the years he was promoted from Ensign to Lt. Commander. At the U.S. Naval Academy, while as an instructor, he was promoted to Commander at Annapolis, Maryland. He was promoted to Captain while in San Diego, California. He served in the Pacific Theater, the Pentagon, and the Defense Supply Agency along with various other assignments. He was a decorated Naval Officer throughout his career. In his final years he spent time with his children and more recently in Greenville, North Carolina. He will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, of 63 years, Bertha, who preceded him in death in 2005.
The family will miss this wonderful father of four, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, friend of many and the people he came to know over the years.
