Obituary for Burl Calvin Swain
Burl Calvin Swain, 58, of Roper died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 11, 1952 in Washington County he was the son of the late Leon Mayo Swain, Sr. and Janet Comer Swain who survives and was preceded in death by his brother, Leon Mayo Swain, Jr. Burl was a U.S. Air Force Veteran with service in Vietnam and member of Holly Neck Church of Christ. He began his working career with Norfolk and Southern Railroad where he worked for twelve years and was later employed with Domtar for twenty years in their power department.
His family includes besides his mother, his wife, Donna Modlin Swain of Roper, N.C.; daughters, Amanda Swain Ivey and husband Kenneth of Knightdale, N.C., Brandy Swain Shaw and husband Jerry of Clayton, N.C.; brothers, David Swain of Moyock, N.C., Darrell Swain of Plymouth, N.C.; grandchildren, Caroline Shaw, Sara Shaw, Mackenzie Ivey and Nina Ivey.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth with Phillip Alligood and Dave Watts officiating with eulogy by Cary Brabble, III. Family will receive friends on Monday, March 21, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to University Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910 or Mid-Atlantic Christian University formerly Roanoke Bible College, 715 N. Poindexter Street, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
