Obituary for Atwood B. Davenport, Jr.
Mr. Atwood B. Davenport, Jr., 91, of Plymouth died Sunday, September 12, 2010, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital, Marlinton, West Virginia.
Born September 28, 1918 in Washington County he was the son of the late Atwood B. Davenport, Sr. and Cora Chesson Davenport and was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Lyle Davenport; brothers, Rama Davenport, Cedric Davenport, Rhonda Lee Davenport, Macon Davenport and Rudolph Davenport. Mr. Davenport was a retired maintenance employee with Weyerhaeuser Corporation and member of Roper Baptist Church. Atwood was a US Army Veteran of World War II and is the last known survivor of Pearl Harbor in Washington County. He enlisted in the US Army on June 27, 1939 and served his basic training at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. After his basic training he saw combat in Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Central Pacific and Southern Philippines. He received many awards and decorations including, The Bronze Star, American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
His family includes his sons, Stanley Davenport and wife Alice of Marlinton, West Virginia, Lyle Davenport of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Rebecca Pelletier of Wilmington, North Carolina; daughter-in-law, Linda Davenport of Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandchildren, Wayne Davenport of Plymouth, North Carolina, Erin Davenport, of Phoeniz, Arizona, Amanda Davenport and Jessica Davenport of Virginia Beach, Virginia and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 10:00 am at Roper Baptist Church, Roper with Reverend Howard Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Roper Baptist Church and other times at his grandson Wayne Davenport's residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
